After over 15 years of helping people with neck pain, we still see the same mistakes time and time again.

Here is the list of the most common mistakes below and what YOU can do about it!

MISTAKE #1

Going for a massage. That’s right going straight for a massage might sound like a good idea, and in some cases, it might be, but if you’ve had the pain for a prolonged period of time a massage may make you feel better for a bit but it won’t get to the underlying issue and ultimately correct the problem.

Take the time to have a proper assessment so that your physio can identify the true cause of the neck pain. Once we both know what the problem is we can start hands-on treatment like massage and make a proper plan to make sure that your neck pain doesn’t come back any time soon.

Mistake #2

Waiting too long to seek professional help!

We always ask how long someone has had their pain and most of the time we are told by the patient that they have had the pain for weeks or months and were hoping that it would get better. Sometimes simple pains will resolve on their own within a couple of days but if your issue is lasting longer than that then you should seek help from a physio.

Neck pain that has been around for a long time will usually take longer to get better once you do seek treatment. However, if you do wait we can still help you recover from your neck pain so it’s never too late to have it looked at.

Mistake #3

Relying on painkillers to mask your symptoms.

Painkillers are needed sometimes to help you get moving and to do your exercises but if you are taking painkillers in the hope that they will solve long term issues then you are missing the point. Painkillers are just masking the symptoms and not treating the true cause of your neck pain.

A good physio (like a physio from Move Freely) will identify your issue and give you the skills needed to easily fix the problem. Most of the time it’s just having the confidence that you are doing the correct things and not making your neck worse.

Mistake #4

Using ice packs instead of heat

It’s a common belief that putting ice on a painful area is helpful, which can be true in some situations but it’s not as simple as just putting ice on anything that is sore. For instance, if you have a very stiff neck and it’s painful to move your head then applying heat to the area can help warm the muscles and allow for some relaxation and better movement of your neck.

Mistake #5

Not doing strength exercises for your neck

Your neck needs to be strong, it has to support your head all day and with increased working, at desks and from home you need a strong neck more than ever. Most of our patients with neck pain will have started stretching their neck when the pain started as it feels stiff but it can often become stiff from an underlying weakness.

You do need to be careful with neck strengthening exercises as it is easy to do the wrong thing and make your neck pain worse. At move freely we are experts in giving you the exact strength exercises that you need and can help give you the confidence to know that you are not going to make anything worse.
